Origins - Aalto family
Founded in 2009, the Estate's owners and management comprise direct descendants of the Finnish architects Alvar Aalto (1898-1976) and Aino Aalto (née Mandelin; Marsio, 1894-1949). Chairman of the Board is grandson Heikki Alanen, other board members are son Hamilkar Aalto and daughter Johanna Alanen. The Executive Director is Aaltos' grandson Henrik Aalto.
Objectives - to protect and revitalise
The Estate aims to continue protecting the vast cultural heritage bestowed by Alvar & Aino Aalto, while supervising the many related rights and their appropriate use. Key considerations were the need to organise the decision-making of the descendants and to provide a competent point of contact for third parties. While the Alvar Aalto Foundation aims to preserve Alvar Aalto's architectural heritage in particular, the Alvar & Aino Aalto Estate is the primary partner as regards both Alvar & Aino Aalto copyrights, trademarks, licensing and agreements, which require the consent of the descendants.
Values - new beginnings from Aaltos' design philosophy
Alvar & Aino Aalto are both well recognised internationally among designers, architects and design conscious people. Together with quality and durability, the Alvar & Aino Aalto brand embraces the beauty and balance of nature, humanity, innovativeness and ingenuity. These values are of utmost importance for any new beginning.
Plans - expanding the brand and creating opportunities
Globally, there's a firm foundation and promising potential for brand development, to which end the Estate welcomes co-operation with parties that appreciate Aaltos' values and design philosophy. International efforts will strive at consolidating the Alvar & Aino Aalto brand and creating new opportunities for products, services and related promotion. Facilitating these tasks are the well-documented life's work of Alvar & Aino and the name that enjoys global recognition.
